During his life, he visited several times the house that the famous writer had rented between 1840 and 1847, on Rue Berton in Passy (near Paris). This house and its garden had two entrances (facing two streets). H.A. Schaeffer represents in this painting, in its original aspect, the entrance at No. 24 on the discreet Rue Berton. Along with a superb work of art, this painting is an important testimony for Balzac enthusiasts.
