This mysterious and atmospheric night landscape depicts a tranquil natural scene, in which a clearly illuminated full moon shines through a dark, cloudy sky. The artist has managed to create a particularly dramatic atmosphere with a strong, loose brushwork and a deep color palette of dark brown, black, and warm ocher tones. On the left in the composition, a few tall, jagged trees stand out against the gold-lit horizon, while an almost invisible path leads the eye into the dark landscape. The warm moonlight forms a beautiful contrast with the deep shadows and gives the painting an almost fairy-tale appearance. The rich texture of the paint and the subtle play between light and darkness enhance the sense of depth and mystery. His father, the well-known Brabant landscape painter Marinus Bies, was his first mentor and introduced him to painting at a young age. Later he studied at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht and developed a completely personal artistic signature. His oeuvre includes paintings, watercolors, and drawings, in which nature, the landscape, and the play of light and atmosphere take a central place. From the 1960s his painting evolved into an increasingly expressionistic and later non-figurative direction, in which color, form, and painterly expression gained significance. Bies lived and worked in, among others, Aarle-Rixtel, Maastricht, Brussels, and Helmond. In addition to his artistry, he played an active role in Brabant’s cultural life. For example, he was involved in the founding of Meyhuis in Helmond and served as an advisor on art matters for the municipality. His work bears witness to a strong connection with the painterly tradition of his family, but also to a continual search for a personal visual language.
