Henk Bies (1928-2006) - Donker landschap - cm 85 x 112

This atmospheric landscape painting depicts a hushed Dutch polder landscape at twilight, where a few modest farms, bare trees, and expansive meadows fade into a dark, mysterious atmosphere. The artist has chosen a restrained color palette of deep greens, browns, and blacks, subtly broken by a warm, golden light strip on the horizon. The low-hanging, threatening clouds amplify the dramatic character of the scene, while the last daylight creates a unique sense of depth. In the foreground, a small farm, a narrow watercourse, and a few wooden fences are visible, emphasizing the rural character of the tableau. The loose, somewhat blurry brushwork gives the painting a dreamy quality, where mood appears more important than a precise depiction of details. The strong contrast between light and dark evokes a sense of quiet, melancholy, and transience. The work offers a compelling imagining of the Dutch countryside, in which the artist has poignantly captured the beauty of an approaching evening. Dimensions: 63 x 90 cm Dimensions with frame: 85 x 112 cm Oil painting on canvas Henk Bies (1928–2006) was a Dutch painter, born in Aarle-Rixtel, who grew up in an artistic family. His father, the well-known Brabant landscape painter Marinus Bies, was his first tutor and introduced him to painting at a young age. Later, he studied at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht and developed a wholly personal artistic signature. His oeuvre includes paintings, watercolors, and drawings, in which nature, the landscape, and the effects of light and atmosphere play a significant role. From the 1960s his painting increasingly moved in a more expressionist and later non-figurative direction, where color, form, and painterly expression gained importance. Bies lived and worked, among others, in Aarle-Rixtel, Maastricht, Brussels, and Helmond. In addition to his artistry, he played an active role in Brabant’s cultural life. He was involved in the founding of Meyhuis in Helmond and acted as an advisor on art matters for the municipality. His work testifies to a strong bond with the painting tradition of his family, but also to a continual search for a personal visual language.
