HEADLESS FIGURE Alaska, Bering Strait Region Punuk Culture, 400–900 CE Walrus tusk (Odobenus rosmarus divergens), with an ancient patina resulting from burial in permafrost. H. 13.5 cm – W. 6 cm Provenance: - Giancarlo Ligabue Collection (1931–2015), Venice An imposing and powerful headless figure representing an ancestor. The upper torso features tattoos in the form of incised lines forming a chevron pattern on the chest. Figures of this kind were likely decapitated by the shaman as a preventive measure—the “killing” of the sculpture perhaps serving to slay the evil spirit inhabiting the patient.
