HARDING, ALEXIS (1973) "The Claw" 2005

| HARDING, ALEXIS (b. 1973) “The Claw” 2005 Mixed media (oil, gloss varnish and pigment on wood panel). 61 × 66 cm. Signed, dated, titled and marked with a directional arrow on the reverse of the panel: “Alexis HARDING 2005 ‘The Claw’ TOP ↑”. The reverse also features a small color sketch and red paint streaks. The handmade wooden frame is an integral part of the work and bears the characteristic traces of the artist’s working process, including paint runs.Alexis Harding, a prominent figure in contemporary British painting and winner of the prestigious John Moores Painting Prize in 2004, is known for his radical exploration of the materiality of paint. His works are less representations than physical events, emerging from the controlled chaos of chemical reactions. This square work from 2005 is a prime example of Harding’s innovative technique. Against a monochrome, intensely burgundy-red ground structured by vertical brushstrokes, the artist has placed a central upright rectangular field. This field consists of a thick application of vivid yellow gloss varnish interspersed with red pigment dots. The fascination of the work lies in the interaction between the upper varnish layer and the medium beneath it. During the drying process, the gloss varnish contracts unevenly, creating a complex, relief-like network structure with an almost organic appearance, reminiscent of exotic skin or an architectural lattice. This calculated material reaction creates a sense of tension, further intensified by the fine red pigment accents emerging from the yellow matrix.Harding employs chance as a creative element, allowing gravity and the chemical properties of the paints to act, often over a period of several weeks. The irregular, frayed edges of the central field bear witness to this dynamic process of flowing and solidifying.Particularly noteworthy is the artist’s incorporation of the wooden support and surrounding frame into the creative process. The frame is not merely a boundary but also serves as a receptacle for excess paint. Detailed views strikingly reveal how layers and drops of red, white and yellow paint have flowed over the edges and solidified there. These “traces of making” are an integral part of the artwork and emphasize its object-like character. The reverse of the wood panel constitutes a visual document in its own right. In addition to the signature and date “2005”, it bears a directional arrow (“TOP ↑”), a small color sketch and expressive red paint streaks, underscoring the work’s raw, studio-fresh character. The title, which can be deciphered here as “The Claw” (?), offers a possible reference to the associative quality of the central form.Works by Alexis Harding are held in significant public and private collections, including the Arts Council of England. The present work offers a rare opportunity to acquire a key piece from one of the most creative phases of his career, fascinatingly exploring the boundary between painting and sculpture. The work is in very good original condition. The drying cracks and surface tensions characteristic of Harding’s work in the central yellow structure are stable and inherent to the material. The paint-covered frame is intentional and forms part of the artist’s overall concept.
