Hand-Carved Sodalite Duck Sculpture from Brazil - Deep...

Sodalite Sculpture with Calcite beak, Brazil provenance — This fascinating sodalite sculpture depicts a duck in an elegant and natural pose, with the head lowered as if seeking food or resting. The piece is masterfully carved from a single block of high-quality sodalite, characterized by a deep, intense blue coloration, variegated with white calcite veining that creates a dynamic contrast and a marbled effect. These natural inclusions not only enrich the mineral’s aesthetic but also attest to its authenticity and geological origin. The carving details are remarkable, with carefully incised feathers that catch the light and add texture and realism to the figure. The surface is polished, highlighting the vitreous luster of sodalite and bringing out the color nuances ranging from cobalt blue to ultramarine blue. The duck’s beak has been deftly fashioned from a warm orange-colored mineral, probably calcite, which creates a lively and realistic color accent, completing the harmony of the composition. Sodalite is a mineral known for its dull to translucent blue color, often associated with deposits of alkaline igneous rocks. Its formation occurs in specific geological environments where hydrothermal or metasomatic processes lead to crystallization of this aluminum silicate with sodium and chlorine. Brazilian deposits are particularly valued for the richness and quality of the sodalite extracted, making this piece a representative example of the craftsmanship and mineral beauty of that region. This sculpture is not just a refined decorative object, but also a collectible that combines the art of sculpture with the intrinsic beauty of the mineral. Its dramatic presence makes it ideal for enriching a bookshelf, a desk, or a display case for a collection, adding a touch of natural and artisanal elegance to any space. It is a superb example of how nature and human skill can collaborate to create an object of rare beauty and interest.
