Gustavo Eguren: La Fidelísima Habana – City of Havana, Cuba, Letras Cubanas Editorial 1986 in 4to, 21 x 27.8 cm., publisher’s paperback, 424 pages, b/w illustrations throughout, fine condition. Gustavo Eguren. Narrator, writer, prose stylist, short story writer, and literary researcher. Of Basque origin. He contributed works of excellent craftsmanship and exquisite humor to Cuban literature. Eguren is considered one of the leading contemporary Cuban writers. He was born in 1925 in Nueva Gerona, Isla de Pinos (now Isla de la Juventud), the son of Basque immigrant parents. When he was just three years old, his family took him to Spain, where he lived until the age of nine. He returned to Cuba in 1934, amidst the Great Depression, and began writing at fifteen. He graduated with a high school diploma in Humanities from the Pinar del Río Secondary School Institute in 1944 and earned a Doctorate in Law from the University of Havana in 1950. During that period, he served on the editorial boards of the magazine *Pinar del Río* and the weekly *Extra del Lunes*. Before the triumph of the Revolution, he held various jobs, working as a mail carrier, teacher, street vendor, and radio and television scriptwriter. In 1959, he was serving as head of the Pacts and Agreements Bureau at the Ministry of Labor. Prior to that date, he had published only two short stories in national magazines and newspapers. Between 1960 and 1965, he served as a diplomat in India, West Germany, Finland, and Belgium. Upon returning to Cuba, he was appointed literary advisor to the presidency of the National Council of Culture in 1967 and served as National Director of Literature from 1968 to 1969. From 1969 to 1971, he worked as a literary researcher at the José Martí National Library. In 1971, he returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he was appointed Cuba's Chargé d'Affaires in Belgium, serving from 1971 to 1972. From that year onward, he served on the editorial board of the magazine *Unión* and later became a member of the executive committee of UNEAC’s Literature Section. Fully committed to the Revolution, he served as a diplomat and subsequently worked at the National Council of Culture and UNEAC. His final literary role involved heading the narrative editorial department at Ediciones Unión. For a long time, Eguren dedicated himself to fostering young literary talent, working with workshops organized by the Hermanos Saíz Brigade and Association, as well as the Ministry of Culture. His work also included serving as a juror for competitions organized by UNEAC, the National Council of Culture, the CDRs, and MINFAR. Careful packaging, fast and tracked shipping.
