Toutes les enchères / Ethnographie / Gothic Style Holy water font - 20th century
Hinges and brush missing AI mode All Visual similarities AI overview This object is an antique bronze or brass situla, better known as a liturgical holy-water bucket. This type of religious vessel is used in the Catholic Church by a priest to carry holy water with him during ceremonies and blessings. Often it comes with a metal handle (grip) and a holy-water brush (aspergillum) to sprinkle the water. Features of this model: Style: Manufactured in a neo-Gothic or neo-Byzantine style. While many of these buckets in design are inspired by medieval vessels from the 16th century, most examples you encounter are high-quality reproductions or church attributes from the 20th century. Decoration: The exterior is around the circumference adorned with detailed reliefs of religious figures under arches, including scenes with Mary and the Christ Child and the Evangelists. Inscription: Along the upper edge there is often a Latin motto in relief letters, such as "JVSTVS ET PALMA FLOREBIT" (The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree).
