Discovery Zone 23°33’ North 08°06’ West These nuggets come from the desert region of Tiris Zemmour in northern Mauritania, more than a hundred kilometres from a area named Guelb Ndour. Gold mining in this country used to be reserved for a large industrial company only. But since 2016 individual mining is authorized using metal detectors. I offer them as I found them, I have only cleaned them with soapy water. The gold from this region is quite pure; generally its purity is about 950 to 980 thousandths, which corresponds to 22.80 to 23.50 carats. Although gold mining has become one of Mauritania’s primary resources, the nuggets are fairly rare because almost all the gold is melted into bars that are then sent to Dubai. All photos were taken in natural daylight. I photographed these nuggets as honestly and accurately as possible using daylight.
