Glamorous Retro Style Ring with Diamonds in Platinum, British, c. 1940s

This precious and magnificent ring from the late Art Deco period makes a glamorous impression. The design presents a stylized bow of white light that rises voluminously and boldly across the finger. The sparkle of the approximately 2.40 carats of diamonds in various historical cuts and the cool shine of the platinum surfaces are pleasing to the eye. The large center stone of around 1.60 carats is a particular feast for the eyes. The gemstone is shaped in a cushion-shaped old cut, the so-called "old mine cut". It has a warm, slightly yellowish color and only very few small inclusions. The ring shows the design language of the style also known as "retro style". After enjoying fine, geometric patterns, the designers of this period increasingly turned to more powerful, more physical shapes. Polished metal surfaces, such as on the sides of the ring, suddenly became fashionable where fine engravings had previously dominated the look. Buckle, ribbon, knot and bow motifs were now particularly popular, as in this ring, which is reminiscent of a clasp or bow. It may be a coincidence that this shift away from the finer, more ethereal shapes of early Art Deco coincided with the Wall Street stock market crash of 1929 - but perhaps this new style offered the promise of stability in a time that had suddenly become uncertain. According to the hallmark, the ring was made in Great Britain and brings together a total of 25 diamonds that were cut at very different times. This suggests that the ring was created in the 1940s, when goldsmiths had little new high-quality material available and therefore often reworked old pieces of jewelry. We discovered the beautifully preserved ring in Vienna. An independent expert opinion has confirmed the quality of the materials used.
