Toutes les enchères / Arts Graphiques / Giacomo Guardi (Italian, 1764-1835) A set of eight Venetian views:

each signed and inscribed with the location and the artist's address verso, bodycolour on blue paper, (8), 11 x 17.4cm; mount 32 x 48cm; unframed, This magnificent set of vividly and freshly painted gouaches was executed by Giacomo Guardi, the son of the quintessential Venetian vedute painter, Francesco Guardi (1712-1793). Following the fashion set by painters such as Canaletto and Michele Marieschi, Giacomo's set of views of 'La Serenissima' became highly sought-after mementos for young milordi on their grand tours. milordi, Giacomo was the youngest son of the great Venetian veduta painter Francesco Guardi, whom he assisted and whose studio he inherited on his father’s death in 1793. Lacking Francesco’s supreme talent, he developed a small-scale type of veduta painting, executed in ink and wash or gouache, and these enjoyed great popularity among visitors to Venice. They tend to be signed on the reverse in the artist’s particular florid style. This drawing, like so much of Giacomo's output, is based on one of his father's compositions, of which several versions in oil exist, including examples in the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam and the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. Another similar view by Giacomo, in pen and ink and grey wash, is held in the Metropolitan Museum, New York. veduta, Condition Report, Condition Report, All eight works are stuck down to their mounts by the edges. Rubbing marks are visible along the margins, with some discolouration and time staining evident across all eight works. The pigments remain in overall stable and fresh condition.
