A gaper served as the signboard of pharmacists, to attract customers, but also as a quality indicator for the shop. Initially this sign was placed on the canopy, but from the 17th century increasingly attached to the facade, particularly common in Amsterdam. The mouth of the gaper is not to gape, but to take a medicine. The grimace of many gapers can be explained by the medicine tasting bad, at least that is the prevailing view.
