Fulgurites are pieces of natural, amorphous silica, very fragile, usually tubular in shape almost cylindrical, evoking a fossilized root, produced by lightning strikes. They are sometimes described as fossilized or petrified lightning. The rarest ones come from the interaction between a thunderbolt and sandy soil. The temperature of the materials can locally and instantaneously rise to several thousand degrees Celsius. This energy causes melting or even vaporization of siliceous materials along the path of the lightning inside the substrate, sometimes over several meters in length, and generally 5 to 20 mm in diameter.
