Fritz Henle (1909–1993) - China

Original gelatin silver print on baryta paper, 27.5 × 35.5 cm. Atmospheric photograph by German-American photographer Fritz Henle (1909–1993), taken in China in 1935 on the road to the Ming Tombs. The composition shows a monumental stone camel in a vast landscape, with further stone figures receding into the distance along the historic Sacred Way leading to the Ming Tombs near Beijing. The photograph is signed in pencil by Fritz Henle on the front - additionally signed, titled, dated and personally dedicated to Hans-Eberhard Hess on the reverse. On the reverse, Henle has handwritten the copyright date 1981, the title “China – Road to the Ming Tombs”, and a personal dedication to the German photography collector Hans-Eberhard Hess. He was a photographer, editor-in-chief and later publisher of Photo International, as well as a member of the German Photographic Society (DGPh). The dedication describes the photograph as an almost symbolic image of the solitary road to the Ming Tombs and recalls Henle's early experiences as a world traveller. The inscription is signed and dated Munich, September 24, 1982. Provenance: Collection of Hans-Eberhard Hess (1948–2021), Munich, Germany.
