French school (XIX) - Portret van een meisje

French School (19th century). Portrait of a young lady. Oil on canvas. Dimensions including frame 52x44 cm. Dimensions without frame 40x33 cm. The painting is in good condition with signs of aging. Atmospheric and refined portrait of a young lady, executed in oil on canvas, in the tradition of French portrait painting of the late 19th century. The young woman is depicted in an elegant three-quarter view, with a subtle, almost mysterious smile, looking over her shoulder at the observer. Her dark, elegantly up-styled hair and the airy white dress with decoratively worked sleeves give the portrait a distinctly romantic appearance. Particularly appealing is the painterly treatment of the face. The soft skin tones, finely worked eyes and delicate pink accents on the cheeks testify to attention to light, expression and character. The looser brushwork in the clothing forms a beautiful contrast with the carefully modeled facial features. On the back of the canvas there is the original-looking blue marking '6 F' corresponding to the traditional French canvas size 'Figure 6'. The dimensions of approximately 40 × 32 cm align closely with this. This marking provides an interesting point of connection for the historical provenance of the canvas.
