Toutes les enchères / Autres / Franz Vetter (1886–1967) - Damenporträt (Ritratto di giovane donna)

FRANZ VETTER (1886–1967) Damenporträt (Ritratto di giovane donna) Gotha, 1925 Pastello su cartone rigido Misure: 79 x 63 cm in cornice Dipinto: 67 x 51 cm The cartouche applied to the back reads: “Damenporträt, Öl auf Pappe, signiert Franz Vetter Gotha 1925. Franz Vetter, 1886 Halle – 1967 Gotha, späte Weimarschule.” Translatable as: “Portrait of a Woman, oil on cardboard, signed Franz Vetter, Gotha 1925. Franz Vetter, 1886 Halle – 1967 Gotha, late Weimar School.” The Author Franz Vetter, also known as Franz Vetter-Gotha, was a German painter, graphic artist and author. Born in Giebichenstein in 1886, he studied painting and art history in Halle from 1907 to 1910 and subsequently at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Kassel, where he completed his training between 1910 and 1913. Specialist sources also indicate a period at the Kunstschule in Weimar. From 1914 Vetter was firmly tied to Gotha, where he carried out artistic and teaching activities in parallel. His role in the city’s cultural life is particularly significant: in 1922 he participated in founding the Künstlervereinigung “Die Garbe,” an association of artists resident in Gotha, of which he was president. The Handbuch des Kunstmarktes of 1926 records him as “Franz Vetter, Maler und Radierer,” painter and draftsman, president of Garbe and resident at Doebelstraße 9. The date 1925 of our painting thus has a certain interest: precisely in 1925 “Die Garbe” organized its own Kunstschau in Gotha. We have no elements to connect this specific portrait to the exhibition, but the work belongs exactly to that phase of Vetter’s career. Historical-Artistic Analysis The painting presents a bust-length image of a young woman, slightly rotated relative to the frontal axis. The figure emerges against a background built with broad vertical fields of dark green and a central brown-ochre area, which creates a chromatic stage around the head. The composition is deliberately essential: the artist relinquishes any narrative or environmental element to focus attention on the model’s psychological presence. Particularly characteristic is the construction of the face. Vetter does not seek photographic naturalism; instead he proceeds through rather sharp chromatic masses and clearness of light and shadow. The eyebrow arches and the orbits are deeply shadowed; the nose is defined by a strong light-dark contrast, while a delicate rosy note on the cheek introduces a chromatic vibration in the skin tone. The coiffure is resolved with broad and synthetic brushstrokes, without minute description of individual strands. The relationship between the brick-red of the dress, the deep green of the side bands and the warm ochre of the background is very effective. The result is a severe and contemplative image, distant from fashionable portraiture and more concerned with the subject’s inner character. Stylistic Framing The work fully situates itself within the German figurative culture of the twenties. The artist’s academic training is perceptible, alongside a progressive simplification of form derived from post-impressionist and German expressionist experiences. The brushwork remains controlled, but the modelling is built mainly through tonal relationships and masses of color. The old indication on the cartouche, “späte Weimarschule” (“late Weimar School”), is thus interesting as a historical attributive testimony, even though today it is preferable not to treat it as a rigid critical classification. Modern sources nevertheless confirm a period of Vetter at the Kunstschule in Weimar. Frame The frame visible in the photographs appears chronologically compatible with the early twentieth century, plausibly dating from the 1910s to the 1930s, and thus potentially coeval or close to the execution of the painting. It is characterized by a molded wooden structure with continuous relief decoration: stylized floral motifs in the inner band and vegetal/foliate motifs along the outer one. The dark finish with gilded metallic highlights produces a deliberately antiqued effect. “antique frame, plausibly coeval or slightly later than the work.” Condition Report Overall state of preservation: fair/good for its age. From examination the painted surface appears substantially stable and legible. Natural aging changes, light abrasions and surface unevenness, small marks and deposits are observable, as well as a varnish apparently altered/yellowed that may have partially modified the original color balance. Abrasion present on the bottom edge of the painting (see photo). The rigid support appears overall stable from the available photographs. The frame shows normal signs of wear, small cracks and localized losses of decoration and finish, consistent with age. The cartouche on the back shows marked aging of the paper, folds, marginal tears and gaps, but remains largely readable. *** Photographic Note Some photographs of the work were taken with the help of professional studio lighting and spotlights to allow better readability of composition, details and the painting’s material. This lighting may cause slight variations in color perception and brightness compared with viewing the work directly. The photographs are for illustrative and documentary purposes only. The frame is provided free of charge with the work and should be considered auxiliary, not included in the painting’s monetary valuation. Given the natural fragility of antique gilded frames, any damage, detachment, breakage or loss of parts of the frame occurring during transport or shipping cannot be the subject of refund, compensation, or dispute regarding the value of the work. Packaging will, however, be prepared with the utmost care to ensure, as far as possible, safe transport. Insured shipment Attribution Expertise *** For historical reasons the work cannot be shipped outside the European Community / insured shipment in a wooden crate
