François de Hérain (1877 - 1962) - Portrait of an Oriental Man

Descriptio Etching on paper. Dimensions: 37 × 29 cm. This portrait, characteristic of the early 20th-century Orientalist style, is by François de Hérain, a French painter, sculptor, and engraver who spent extended periods in North Africa during the French Protectorate. The work depicts a man wearing a djellaba and turban, with meticulous detailing of the face that deliberately contrasts with the more schematic rendering of the clothing. This interplay between detail and simplicity lends depth and vibrancy to the image and belongs to the series of North African types that the artist developed throughout his career.
