François Chapuis (1928-2002) was a French painter, sculptor and master glassmaker from Meurthe-et-Moselle. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy and then at the Centre d'Art Sacré in Paris, he fully aligned himself with the post-war renewal movement of religious architecture. He designed the stained glass windows and skylights of numerous French churches and allied himself with the lyrical abstraction movement alongside renowned artists. His name is mainly associated with the major invention, in the 1960s, of the “mur-lumière” (wall of light), an innovative structure blending resin, plexiglass and pigments. Close to Sonia Delaunay, this versatile artist profoundly marked modern and sacred art of the 20th century through his chromatic experiments.
