France - Gaul: present-day France with borders on the United Kingdom

Old copper-engraved map of France, hand-enhanced, by Hondius, published in 1633 in the Mercator-Hondius atlas. It shows the kingdom of France depicted with its provinces, underscored by period coloring, from the Channel to the Mediterranean. To the north are the southern part of England and the Dutch Low Countries, to the east Lorraine, Alsace, Switzerland and Savoy, to the south the Pyrenees and Corsica. The title cartouche, in the bottom left corner, is framed by a nude man holding clusters of grapes and a woman bearing a horn of plenty. It is topped by a putto with torches. The arms of France, three fleurs-de-lis under a crown, occupy the upper right corner. At sea, one can discern a compass rose with a fleur-de-lis, two galleons off the coast of Brittany, a ship accompanied by a sea monster and a second sea monster. The relief is depicted in profile and the towns by small symbols. The cartouche bears the address “Amstelodami apud H. Hondium, Anno 1631”. French text printed on the verso (pp. 245 and 248). - Dimensions: on the sheet: 56 x 47.5 cm; on the plate (map): 46.9 x 35.3 cm - Condition: Good overall for a map of this period. Presence of a vertical central crease, a small tear in the lower margin, and light stains. See photos for more details. Atlas Mercator-Hondius - The atlas called “Mercator-Hondius” reprises the work of Gerard Mercator, whose copperplates were acquired by Jodocus Hondius in 1604. This French edition of 1633 is signed by his son Henricus Hondius and his son-in-law Joannes Janssonius, who added new maps. Henricus Hondius – Henricus Hondius (1597-1651), engraver and publisher of maps in Amsterdam, was the son of Jodocus Hondius. The latter acquired in 1604 the copperplates of Gerard Mercator (1512-1594). Henricus continued the atlas edition, often associated with Johannes Janssonius, hence the designation “Atlas Mercator-Hondius”.
