Historical and collecting note: The ebonite (originally called vulcanite) was invented in the mid-19th century by Charles Goodyear (the inventor of vulcanization from which the name of the auto tire company derives). By increasing the sulfur content in natural rubber, Goodyear obtained a hard and perfect material that perfectly imitated ebony wood, which is why, at commercial level, the name ebonite was preferred.
