Fr. 76. 1880 $5 Legal Tender Note. PMG About Uncirculated 55. Part of a long-lived series that lingered for almost 30 years before its ultimate retirement in the 1900s. This note although representative of an iconic design largely encountered upon $5 Legal Tender Notes issued under the Series of 1907 represents the Rosecrans - Huston signature combination that was current from only 1889 to 1891 and is seen in the company of a peach-red spiked Treasury seal that would be discontinued in the early 1890s. Such a distinction is nonetheless shared by a relatively small handful of notes with Track & Price recording less than 100 surviving pieces and offers a sight that demonstrates a firm contrast against later issues and especially the Series of 1907 making this something of an opportunity for the collector enamored with this design that has long captivated collectors.
