Fr. 275. 1899 $5 Silver Certificate. PMG About Uncirculated 55. Representative of a better signature combination for this iconic and long-lived design. This lightly circulated $5 Silver Certificate issued under the Series of 1899 represents the short-lived Napier - McClung signature combination current from 1911 to 1912 that surprisingly lingered past its retirement as non-current plates were kept for production purposes for some denominations through January 1914. The reasoning behind that distinction can ultimately be chalked up to the brief tenure of Treasurer Carmi A. Thompson. Now Thompson's tenure in that position lasted for a only few months and spawned the short-lived Napier - Thompson signature combination, but held against the numerical grade of "55" this may be little more than a secondary consideration for the collector looking for an attractive example of this quintessentially American design.
