Four Roman, Medieval & Ottoman Finger Rings

Europe and Near East, Roman, Medieval and Ottoman periods. A quartet of finger rings spanning some eighteen centuries of personal adornment. The first, a Medieval copper alloy band, carries a convex oval bezel worn smooth beneath a mottled green and cuprite-red patina. The second, Roman copper alloy, presents a disc bezel punched with four ring-and-dot motifs, a device that circulated across the provinces for centuries. The third, a Medieval bronze hoop, thickens into a heavy shoulder-to-shoulder bezel bearing an incised curvilinear device, perhaps a debased zoomorph or foliate scroll. The fourth, a 19th C. Ottoman leaded brass seal ring, retains a warm golden surface and an intaglio-cut oval engraved with lines of stylized script, likely a name or pious formula intended to be read in wax or ink impression. The ring-and-dot motif on the Roman example is among the most persistent ornaments in antiquity: struck with a simple tubular punch, it appears on bone, bronze, and glass from Britain to Syria, and its very simplicity has made close dating notoriously difficult. On finger rings it functions less as decoration than as a compact apotropaic eye. The Ottoman seal ring belongs to a living documentary tradition. Across the empire a personal seal, the muhur, served as legal signature: the engraving is cut in mirror image and in a compressed Arabic hand, often stacking a given name, a patronymic, and an invocation such as a Quranic phrase or the owner's date of commission into a tightly ruled oval. Such rings were the everyday instruments of merchants, scribes, and officials, pressed into wax or, more commonly, into lampblack ink at the foot of a contract or letter. Item # 204798
