Fossil Sand Dollar on Original Matrix - Fossil skeleton - Clypeaster sp

Large Clypeaster Fossil Sand Dollar on Original Matrix – Miocene – Egypt An attractive fossil sand dollar of the genus Clypeaster, dating to the Miocene Epoch and originating from Egypt. Beautifully preserved on its original sedimentary matrix, this specimen displays the characteristic rounded shape and delicate five-petaled pattern of these ancient marine echinoids. The fossil features a warm terracotta and sandy orange coloration, beautifully contrasting with the pale beige and greyish tones of the surrounding limestone. Its broad, gently domed surface reveals a well-defined ambulacral pattern, with five elongated petal-shaped structures radiating symmetrically from the center. Particularly interesting are the fine details preserved within each petal, where delicate rows of tiny pores remain visible. Subtle darker markings, natural surface irregularities, and small cavities add character to the fossil, reflecting its geological history. The specimen remains partially embedded in a substantial, irregularly shaped limestone matrix, which forms a natural support and gives the piece a distinctive sculptural appearance. The contrast between the relatively smooth, rounded fossil and the rough, granular rock emphasizes its authentic preservation. Natural fractures and minor areas of weathering are visible across the surface, particularly along one side of the fossil, without obscuring its characteristic five-petaled morphology. Clypeaster sea urchins inhabited ancient shallow marine environments, and their distinctive flattened to domed tests are highly appreciated for their elegant natural symmetry. Origin: Egypt Geological Age: Miocene Genus: Clypeaster sp. Fossil Dimensions: Approximately 8 × 7.5 cm A charming and beautifully presented fossil, combining recognizable echinoid anatomy, warm natural coloration, and the authentic character of its original matrix. An appealing addition to any fossil collection, natural history display, or refined cabinet of curiosities.
