Fossil Ammonite from the Jurassic

Large fossil ammonite of the species Kranaosphinctes rabei, originating from southwestern Madagascar and dating to the Late Jurassic, Oxfordian, about 161–156 million years ago. An important and highly striking specimen, with a maximum diameter of 410 mm and weight of 17,600 grams. The shell preserves a broad and clearly readable spiral, with pronounced radial ribs and strong three-dimensional volume, typical of ammonites in the Perisphinctidae family. The surface alternates pale ivory white and calcitic cream tones with zones of intense reddish oxidized red, rust brown, terracotta, and dark honey. The ferruginous hues are due to iron oxides that penetrated the fossil during the long mineralization in the marine sediments of the Morondava Basin. A large fossil for a collection, with strong ornamental impact, ideal for a paleontological collection, Wunderkammer, study, or naturalistic interior design.
