Fort Lyon, Colorado Territory. Sutler's Check. 1860s 10 Cents. PMG

An Unissued Remnant of the Frontier Fort Lyon, Colorado Territory. Sutler's Check. 1860s 10 Cents. PMG Choice Very Fine 35. Remainder. Durand COT-11, Listed as Rarity 7 (1-5 known). Uniface and printed on bond paper without an imprint. "SUTLER'S CHECK" curved as an undertint at center and executed in red. "GOOD FOR/TEN CENTS,/PAYABLE IN MERCHANDISE" across center and enclosed by a plain blue perimeter along the margins. "FORT LYON, COL. TER." in bold lettering below the top margin. Just below it the serial number space and partly printed date "186_". Large block counter "10 Cts" at bottom left. There is space to sign the note along the bottom at the lower left, but we have only seen notes from this series as unsigned Remainders and we believe that no issued examples exist. Fort Lyon is the name of two different U.S. Army forts that operated in eastern Colorado beginning around 1860. The first fort was originally named for Virginia governor Henry Wise but was renamed in 1862 in honor of Union General Nathaniel Lyon who was killed at the Battle of Wilson's Creek in Missouri in 1861. The fort operated in its original location until a newly constructed Fort Lyon opened near Las Animas in 1867. Our research leads us to believe these notes likely date to the first location. Part of the history of Fort Lyon is the notorious Sand Creek Massacre in which militiamen from Fort Lyon, led by Colonel John Chivington, attacked and destroyed a Native American village that was under the impression of being protected by their very attackers. The assault killed as many as 160 Cheyenne and Arapaho with mostly women and children accounting for the dead. We originally sold this same note for $4,830 as part of the John J. Ford Jr. Collection almost 20 years ago making this an impeccable treat for the specialist who recognizes this as a truly rare opportunity to be had. Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500. Provenance: Ex. John J. Ford Jr. Collection Click here for certification details from PMG.
