Follower of Jean-Baptiste Greuze Portrait of a lady, said to be Madame

oil on canvas, oval, 74 x 60.5cm; framed 99 x 86cm, The prime version of Greuze's portrait is found in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Angers. Condition Report, Condition Report, Relined. Craquelure and stretcher marks. Rubbing to edges. A little light surface dirt and discolouration with a slightly yellow hue overall, may benefit for a light clean. Examination under UV light reveals an area of possible retouching to the background in the upper left and a smaller patch fluoresces strongly above the sitter's head. There is some further light fluorescing to the sitter's hair, right shoulder and the dog, however the surface is largely obscured by a layer of patchy varnish which makes reading difficult, potentially concealing further restoration.
