Toutes les enchères / Art Ancien / Folding screen with Nanga landscape - Paper

A tall six-panel folding screen 屏風 (byôbu) with Kanô school nanga painting depicting a vast waterside landscape by Kanô Eigaku 狩野永岳 (1790–1867). A scholar’s retreat stands beside the shore, its thatched pavilion looking out over the open water. A scholar sits beneath the roof while a child (karako) points across the water. Pines line the shore, and distant mountain peaks emerge through translucent clouds flecked with gold and silver leaf. The painting is executed in ink with touches of pigment on mulberry paper, heightened with gold- and silver-leaf speckles. It is surrounded by two patterned silk borders and set within a black-lacquered frame. Signed in the lower right-hand corner 狩野縫殿助永岳 (Kanô Nuidonosuke Eigaku), with two red name seals. Kanô Eigaku 狩野永岳 (1790–1867) was the ninth head of the Kyôto Kanô family 京狩野家. Born the son of painter Kageyama Dôgyoku 影山洞玉, he was adopted by Kanô Eishun 狩野永俊 and succeeded him in 1816. He studied the work of earlier Kanô masters while incorporating elements of the Shijô school 四条派 and literati painting 南画 (nanga). His large-scale paintings were commissioned by the Imperial Court, prominent families and temples. Period: Japan – Late Edo period (first half of the 19th century). Dimensions: Height 172.2 cm; total width 352 cm (2 x 60 cm and 4 x 58 cm). In very good condition, with signs of age on both sides, including some vertical water stains. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition. The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can of course also be displayed as a standalone piece. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
