Florida Gilded Age Hotel and Naval Ephemera Collection

Collection of travel and maritime ephemera, late 19th through mid-20th century, primarily documenting Florida Gilded Age tourism and United States naval history. Group includes multiple luxury hotel menus: a Hotel Alcazar dinner menu dated Saturday, February 22, 1896, featuring a printed American flag graphic and naming JOS. P. GREAVES as manager; a Royal Poinciana dinner menu dated Saturday, February 7, 1925; a Breakers Palm Beach luncheon menu dated Jan. 29 1927; and an undated Hotel Ponce de Leon breakfast menu managed by ROBERT MURRAY. Correspondence features a typed letter on Atlantic Coast Line stationery dated January 29, 1957, signed by President W. Thomas Rice in blue ink as Tom Rice. Handwritten letters include examples on Hotel Ormond stationery dated Feb 11th 1901 signed Winchester Fitch and Hotel Colonial stationery dated March 9/03. Two postmarked envelopes from 1903 and 1907 bear Ponce de Leon logos and circular stamps for SAINT AUGUSTINE, FLA. Maritime and travel materials include an original black and white photograph captioned U.S.S. HORNET. 17 - 8 - 4 in white on the lower edge, accompanied by modern research printouts from 2008. A decorative Atlantic Coast Line booklet is titled Atlantic Coast Line Vestibuled Train to Florida, dated MDCCCLXXXVII. Additional items include Ask Mr. Foster travel service brochures, a modern Casa Monica Hotel brochure, a sepia-toned waterfront hotel print, and a single 35mm color transparency slide.
