Flip clock - Rhythm No

A Fascinating Example of Japanese Mechanical Ingenuity and Vintage Industrial Design An attractive and technically fascinating Rhythm No. 7RD001 vintage transistor flip clock, manufactured in Japan, featuring a Floating Balance movement, mechanical bell alarm and an ingenious hour-changing mechanism. Combining traditional horological engineering with transistor technology, this remarkable timepiece represents an interesting chapter in the evolution of Japanese clocks, before electronic digital displays became widespread. Its elegant woodgrain-effect housing, striking black-and-white numerical display and unusual internal construction make it a particularly interesting object for collectors of Japanese horology, mechanical flip clocks and vintage industrial design. Tested and working, keeping time correctly, with its mechanical bell alarm fully operational. RHYTHM – Japanese Clockmaking Heritage Since 1950 Rhythm is one of Japan's established clock manufacturers, with a history closely connected to the country's post-war development in precision engineering and horology. The company originated from Noson Tokei Seisakujo, established in 1946, before Rhythm Watch Co., Ltd. was formally founded in November 1950, with its headquarters in Tokyo and manufacturing facilities in Saitama Prefecture. Rhythm quickly became associated with innovation in Japanese clock manufacturing. In 1951, the company introduced Japan's first domestically produced plastic-frame clock, an important development in the application of new materials to clock design. In 1953, Rhythm established technical, commercial and financial cooperation with Citizen Watch Co., Ltd., strengthening its position within the Japanese horological industry. By 1972, Rhythm had become the world's largest clock manufacturer by production volume, according to the company's official history. The Rhythm No. 7RD001 reflects the company's tradition of combining practical design, mechanical ingenuity and technological development. Rather than relying on a conventional electrically powered synchronous motor, this clock uses a battery-operated transistor Floating Balance movement, illustrating an interesting stage in the transition from traditional mechanical clocks towards modern electronic timekeeping. DESIGN – Japanese Mid-Century Aesthetics and Retro Modernism The Rhythm No. 7RD001 features a beautifully proportioned rectangular body, combining the warmth of a brown woodgrain-effect finish with the functional simplicity of a Japanese numerical clock. The exterior is manufactured from brown plastic with a decorative woodgrain finish, recreating the visual character of wooden furniture and domestic accessories popular during the Mid-Century and retro periods. Its clean horizontal silhouette, geometric construction and carefully arranged front panel give the clock an understated yet distinctive appearance. The front is characterised by a dark, almost architectural composition, framed by contrasting silver-coloured trim. At its centre, two large mechanical flip displays present the hours and minutes in bold white numerals against deep black backgrounds. This dramatic contrast ensures excellent readability while creating the characteristic visual effect associated with classic split-flap timepieces. The two numerical displays are separated by small circular decorative elements, contributing to the balanced geometry of the front panel. To the left of the hour display is a particularly interesting vertical alarm-setting scale, featuring white numerical markings and a contrasting red triangular pointer. The elegant Rhythm signature, positioned on the right-hand side of the front panel, provides a refined finishing detail. A small rectangular window above the logo further enhances the carefully structured appearance of the clock. The side-mounted adjustment control and discreet upper button are integrated into the compact housing without disturbing its clean lines. The clock rests on a slightly recessed pedestal-style base, giving the rectangular body a subtle floating appearance. Its design is both functional and decorative: an attractive vintage tabletop clock equally suited to a collection of Japanese timepieces, retro electronics or Mid-Century interiors. Original Glass Front Panel An interesting detail is the genuine glass front panel, rather than a conventional plastic window. The glass can be removed relatively easily for cleaning, allowing access to the interior surface without the need for aggressive polishing of the transparent front. This practical construction also reflects the thoughtful engineering of the clock. AN INGENIOUS HOUR-CHANGING MECHANISM – THE 59TH MINUTE FLAP One of the most fascinating characteristics of this particular Rhythm flip clock is its unusual hour-changing mechanism. Many conventional mechanical flip clocks employ a central cam or a similar synchronisation system to control the transition between hours. The Rhythm No. 7RD001 uses a different and particularly clever solution. The minute display incorporates a specially arranged mechanical lever that is activated by the final minute flap, corresponding to minute 59. As the minute mechanism reaches the end of its cycle, the 59th-minute flap engages this lever, mechanically triggering the advancement of the hour display. In this arrangement, the minute assembly itself provides the mechanical action required to initiate the hour change. This eliminates the need for the conventional central hour-changing cam found in many other flip-clock constructions. The result is an ingenious and compact mechanical solution, demonstrating the attention paid to functional engineering in Japanese clockmaking. The internal photographs reveal the number-flap assemblies, toothed gears, metal retaining components and the distinctive lever arrangement. For collectors interested in the development of flip-clock technology, this construction is one of the most appealing features of the model. 24-Hour Mechanical Display The clock features a full 24-hour numerical indication rather than the more commonly encountered 12-hour format. The hour and minute indications are displayed through individual mechanical split-flap assemblies. The contrasting white numerals on black flaps provide the iconic appearance of vintage digital-mechanical clocks, long before LED and LCD displays became commonplace. All numerical flaps are present. TRANSISTOR FLOATING BALANCE MOVEMENT Unlike mains-powered flip clocks that use synchronous electric motors, this Rhythm incorporates an electromechanical timekeeping system based on a transistor-controlled Floating Balance movement. The mechanism combines traditional mechanical clockmaking principles with electronic impulse control. Its balance assembly regulates the movement, while the transistor-operated electrical system provides the impulses necessary to sustain its operation. The regulated mechanical motion is transmitted through the gear train to the numerical display. This approach represents a fascinating technological transition between fully mechanical clock movements and later electronic quartz timekeeping. The internal construction includes precision gears, a mechanical regulating system and electrical components, illustrating the combination of traditional watchmaking and emerging electronic technology. The transparent movement cover allows part of the internal regulating mechanism to be observed. For enthusiasts of historical timekeeping mechanisms, the Floating Balance movement is an appealing feature in its own right. Battery Operation The clock operates using a single 1.5V C-size battery. This independent battery-powered arrangement eliminates the need for a mains electricity connection and makes the clock suitable for display in different locations. Battery is not included in the sale. TRADITIONAL MECHANICAL BELL ALARM Another particularly charming characteristic of the Rhythm No. 7RD001 is its traditional mechanical bell alarm. Instead of relying solely on an electronic buzzer, the clock incorporates a physical metal bell, visible in the internal photographs. The mechanism produces an authentic mechanical ringing sound when the alarm is activated. Its golden-coloured bell contrasts attractively with the predominantly black movement assembly and is another interesting example of the clock's mechanical construction. The alarm time is selected using the dedicated adjustment mechanism, with the setting indicated by the red pointer on the vertical numerical scale. The mechanical bell alarm has been tested and operates correctly. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Manufacturer: Rhythm Watch Co., Ltd. VIDEO – FUNCTIONAL DEMONSTRATION A video showing the clock and its operation is available at the following link: https://youtu.be/E9plomTryDc The video is provided to document the operational condition and characteristics of the actual item offered for sale. Vintage flip clocks are precision mechanical devices containing numerous moving components, including numerical flaps, gears, levers, springs and synchronisation mechanisms. Their operation differs significantly from that of modern electronic clocks. The change of the minute or hour may be accompanied by a characteristic mechanical clicking sound caused by the movement and release of the numerical flaps. These sounds are part of the normal operating characteristics of mechanical split-flap displays and do not, by themselves, indicate a malfunction. The mechanism may also produce subtle mechanical sounds during operation. The intensity and frequency of such sounds may vary depending on the mechanism, the surrounding environment and the natural characteristics of individual vintage clocks. Due to their age, mechanical flip clocks may exhibit variations in the timing or smoothness of individual flap transitions. A video demonstrating the operation of this particular clock is supplied for reference. This is an original vintage electromechanical clock, not a modern quartz-controlled timepiece. Its movement incorporates mechanical regulating components and electronic impulse control, which means its behaviour and timekeeping characteristics should not be compared directly with those of modern quartz clocks. Although the clock has been tested and keeps time during testing, no guarantee of quartz-level accuracy or continuous long-term precision is implied. Mechanical timekeeping may be influenced by environmental conditions, temperature, battery condition, positioning, movement wear and the characteristics of the regulating mechanism. Occasional adjustments may be necessary. The mechanical bell alarm has been tested successfully. However, alarm timing and operation should be understood in the context of the original vintage mechanical construction. The movement contains delicate components that should be handled carefully. Any future maintenance, regulation, cleaning or repairs should preferably be carried out by a qualified technician familiar with vintage mechanical and electromechanical clocks.
