DESCRIPTION: I present at auction a historically and bibliographically important FIRST EDITION: "Instincts and Habits of the Solitary Wasps," a fundamental work by the renowned American arachnologists and entomologists George Williams Peckham (1845–1914) and Elizabeth Gifford Peckham (1854–1940). Published in Madison, Wisconsin in 1898 by the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (Bulletin No. 2, Scientific Series No. 1), this first edition is a milestone in animal behavior biology that directly influenced contemporary ethology studies. It stands out for its splendid graphic section, signed by the prestigious scientific illustrator J. H. Emerton, gathering color lithographs, anatomical plates, and detailed field studies off the text. ILLUSTRATIVE DISPLAY AND ARTISTIC FEATURES: + Magnificent Color Lithographed Plates off Text: Full-color lithographed plates by J. H. Emerton (J. H. Emerton del.) with impeccable reproduction of the morphology, nuances, and venation of solitary wasps. + Black-and-White Plates of Behavior and Natural History: Scientific engravings of great dramatic impact and precision showing wasps interacting with their environment, transporting prey and excavating subterranean nests. + Editorial Binding of the Era with Superb Gold Tooling: Preserved in its original cloth binding with elegant red morocco spine label bearing titles and ornamental lines in bright gold leaf. Especially noteworthy is the presence on both covers of a majestic heraldic overstamp in gold, gold-embossed, reproducing with exquisite stamp fineness the nobiliary coat of arms with the double-headed eagle and emblematic elements of the barony, framed by an oval filigree of distinguished refinement crowning the binding. The scientific plates of this monograph combine anatomical taxonomy with figurative engraving based on direct observation: + Color Taxonomic Studies (Plates I and II): Chromolithographic illustrations of high chromatic precision showing specimens in dorsal view with wings spread, highlighting morphological differences between genera and species such as Pompilus, Philanthus, Bembex, Crabro, Ammophila, Chalybion, and Pelopœus. Notably, the extreme thinness of the abdominal pedicel of the species Ammophila, with meticulous detail in the spiny legs and wing venation design. + Field and Ethology Plates (Plate III - XIII): Spectacular full-page engravings such as the one depicting Ammophila urnaria paralyzing and dragging a bulky caterpillar toward the entrance of its underground nest, a celebrated biological observation scene in entomological literature. + Anatomical Illustrations of Macro-Detail and Nests: Anatomical diagrams and architectural side-profile cuts of subterranean tunnels and galleries (Nest of Sphex, Nest of Philanthus), as well as impressive frontal-angle plans showing the insect’s head and jaws emerging from its earth burrow. PROVENANCE OF HIGH BRITISH ARISTOCRACY: Ex-Libris Engraving of Sir Herbert Maxwell: Preserved inside the endpapers is a beautiful full-page bookplate belonging to Sir Herbert Eustace Maxwell, 7th Baronet of Monreith (1845–1937), a renowned politician, naturalist, antiquarian, and Scottish writer, with the motto "Liber Herberto Custacio Maxwell, Baronetto de Monreith, dilectus" and the family crest flanked by deer.
