A summer afternoon on a Denver street, seen from just above eye level: two American cars from an earlier decade sit at the curb while the neighborhood's trees press in from all sides, as if the suburb is only tolerating the pavement on a provisional basis. Fern Horwitz renders the scene in acrylic on canvas, her palette organized around the deep, varied greens of mature urban foliage, relieved by the salmon-pink roof of the brick bungalow centered in the composition and the pale bodies of the parked cars below. The viewpoint is slightly elevated, perhaps from a window across the street, lending the picture the unhurried, observational quality of someone who has looked at this corner many times and finally decided it was worth keeping. The brushwork is direct and confident, forms blocked in with economy rather than fussed over, and the overall effect sits comfortably in the tradition of American realist townscape painting without being beholden to any particular school of it.
