Federico de Madrazo (1815-1894)

Federico de Madrazo (1815-1894)

- Oil on canvas. Original canvas. - This portrait of the apparatus of Queen Elizabeth II of Spain stands as an outstanding example of Isabeline official portraiture from the mid-19th century, conceived to project the majesty and decorum of the crown. The sovereign is depicted three-quarter, wearing a sumptuous gala dress in a satin bluish-green tone adorned with intricate zigzag borders and lace, complemented by the crown and scepter arranged to the right on a crimson velvet cushion. The composition balances the distinction of the royal jewels and the formal gloves with the restraint of the architectural background, achieving an effigy that merges institutional pomp with the refinement characteristic of the courtly milieu. The general conception of the painting scrupulously fulfils the guidelines and models set by the workshop of Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz, First Painter of the Court and hegemonic figure of academic portraiture at the Madrid court. Madrazo’s workshop standardized this type of regal effigies to meet the high demand for official portraits destined for state bodies, embassies, and high institutions, characterized by compositional sobriety, refined drawing of features, and an impeccable technical rendering of gala attire. However, certain aspects of the painting’s execution allow us to assign the direct handiwork of this canvas to the hand of Leopoldo Sánchez del Bierzo, a prominent pupil and collaborator within Madrazo’s workshop. This particular intervention is evident in the decisiveness of the drawing and the volumetric modeling of the queen’s face, as well as in the meticulous craft in rendering material qualities, from the changing reflections of satin to the meticulous shine of the gemstones and the crown. Sánchez del Bierzo demonstrates here his mastery in replicating the formal language of the master, while also contributing a clean and precise technical definition in the portrayal of the character. - Image dimensions without frame: 105 x 145 cm / 120 x 160 cm with exclusive custom frame. At Montbaron Gallery, we are pleased to offer our clients an exclusive selection of artworks, all of them unique, original, and unrepeatable. Thus, we guarantee that every piece that leaves our gallery is a unique item in the world, without any replica, and a demonstration of the innovation and passion of the artists we work with. Certain lots, due to their age and value, require an export license granted by the Ministry of Culture. Although this is an administrative procedure, it is essential to ensure the authenticity of the work and its free international circulation. Montbaron Gallery is committed to offering its clients original, unique, and unrepeatable artworks, guaranteeing the authenticity and quality of each piece in our collection. The Certificate of Guarantee includes full details about the piece, such as author, date of creation, technique used, and dimensions. The digital Certificate of Guarantee will be issued at the client's request, providing an official reference for the acquired piece. This document will be delivered in digital format and signed by an art historian from our gallery, ensuring its validity and support. We are committed to the satisfaction and confidence of our clients, so any questions about authenticity or the state of the work will be addressed professionally and diligently. To this end, we work with a network of professionals specialized in art transport, who guarantee maximum care throughout the process. It is important to note that the shipping cost prices indicated in the listing are indicative and subject to changes depending on various circumstances. These include fluctuations in transport market rates, changes in delivery location, the size and weight of the work, and possible extraordinary circumstances, such as fluctuations in fuel costs or adjustments to customs and import tariffs. The final shipping cost will be calculated accurately based on these factors, and the client will always be informed beforehand before proceeding with shipment. Our aim is to offer the best possible service, tailoring to each client’s needs and ensuring that the work arrives at its destination quickly and safely, with no surprises. The frame shown in the previous images has been added to the work by a third party or by the seller, and is therefore not an integral part of the object. This frame is provided at no extra cost so that, when the work arrives at your home, it can be immediately mounted on your wall.
