All times have their fashions, and all fashions have their effects on jewellery. Jewelry from the 1980s is an impressive testimony to a time of optimism and abundance: the oil crisis seemed to have been overcome, Wall Street was flourishing. People sipped cocktails and paid by credit card, anything seemed possible. At the same time, a new image of women emerged. Self-confident and tough, holding her own at work, successful in the face of men, with broad shoulder pads and high heels, she adorned herself with rings, necklaces and brooches in hitherto unfamiliar dimensions, with reflective surfaces made of yellow gold and richly set with colored gemstones. A lot of costume jewelry was created, as the pieces of jewellery made from real materials would have been unaffordable for most women; they were intended to look so large and heavy. But of course luxurious pieces were also created from luxurious materials. These ear clips come from the studio of Stuttgart goldsmith Günter Krauss and are unique handmade pieces from those years. Krauss, born in Pforzheim in 1943, became one of the most important figures in jewelry design in Germany. His works are still popular with international customers today, particularly due to their unique style and skillful use of exquisite materials, and are highly recognizable. The large ear clips are made of high-carat gold and two large red Mediterranean corals, which hold the Omega clips as upper parts. The natural corals are cut into large cabochons and display an unusually uniform coloration with a combined weight of around 34.00 carats. Attached to them are large, cone-shaped discs of dark blue lapis lazuli. Krauss succeeds in placing the precious material at the center of attention without overloading it with excessive design. The clear colors reinforce each other and are the real protagonists of the pair. These earrings thus combine quality craftsmanship with a calm, self-confident elegance that is characteristic of German jewelry design in the 1980s. The clip earring design reflects the taste of the time. An impressive pair that makes an impact with its material and scale. The pair came to us from Stuttgart, the city where it was created.
