Family Album Made of Gold as a Locket Pendant, c. 1885

This yellow gold locket has a special touch: it is crafted in the shape of a small photo album, complete with a decoratively embellished cover. The book is executed with great attention to detail. Both covers feature delicate engravings, and even the small clasp can be opened. With the rapid spread of photography since the mid-19th century, personal mementos took on a whole new meaning. Photographic portraits of family members and friends were collected, kept in albums, and—in miniature form—worn as jewellery directly on the body. This small album combines both forms in a particularly charming way. A total of six photographs can be inserted inside. Five of them fit behind small frames with glass; unfortunately, the sixth frame is missing, so the sixth photograph must be glued in. The pendant is a wonderful example of the distinctive culture of remembrance in the 19th century. Its design and craftsmanship suggest it was made in Germany. We have paired the locket with a matching gold chain.
