fabric - Thailand - Late 20th century

Pair of Thai textile art works from the second half of the 20th century, depicting figures drawn from Thailand's traditional iconography. The figures are shown in poses characteristic of Thai classical dance and theater, with elongated headdresses, ceremonial costumes richly adorned with ornaments and numerous decorative details. The work is distinguished by the use of vivid tones and gold highlights that stand out strongly against the dark background. This decorative technique, typical of many Thai works intended for framing in the mid-20th century, particularly emphasizes the jewelry, headdresses, and geometric patterns of the garments. Pieces executed on a fine textile. The exact nature of the textile has not been analyzed; many comparable pieces are described as being made on silk, sometimes with gold highlights or metal leaf.
