The custom of presenting a diamond ring as an engagement gift has been documented since the late Middle Ages. However, this hardest of all gemstones was a real treasure and almost exclusively the privilege of the nobility. It was only after rich deposits were discovered in South Africa in the late 19th century that the broader classes were able to afford diamond jewellery. The classic engagement ring, a solitaire ring with a central diamond, is said to date back to a design by the famous jeweller Tiffany & Co. in 1886. To this day, this form of ring has remained the epitome of the engagement ring. This is because it combines all the symbolism that can be expected from a piece of jewellery that is based on a promise. At its center, the English ring presents a sparkling brilliant cut diamond weighing around 0.88 carats. The radiant gemstone is held by delicate prongs and almost floats between the slender shoulders.
