Importante edizione settecentesca dell'Index Librorum Prohibitorum, il celebre repertorio ufficiale dei libri sottoposti alla censura ecclesiastica cattolica, nella redazione promulgata sotto il pontificato di Benedetto XIV (1740-1758) e successivamente ristampata e aggiornata. The volume opens with a beautiful copper-engraved frontispiece depicting the condemnation and burning of books deemed prohibited, surmounted by papal insignia, followed by the title page with an elegant engraved printer’s mark. The introductory apparatus includes the text by Fr. Thomas Augustinus Ricchinius, of the Order of Preachers and secretary of the Sacred Congregation of the Index, which explains the criteria and principles underlying the compilation of the Index. Ricchinius’s role as compiler/curator of the introductory apparatus is confirmed by bibliographic catalogs. The work constitutes a document of particular interest for the history of the Church, of book censorship, of printing and the circulation of ideas in eighteenth-century Europe. The Index collects alphabetically the authors and works prohibited or restricted, directly documenting the ecclesiastical censorship system of the modern age. Format: in-8°. No modern restoration work is evident from the photographs. Note of collectible interest This is a particularly significant document of eighteenth-century book culture: the Index Librorum Prohibitorum represents one of the most important tools by which the Catholic Church regulated for centuries the reading and diffusion of printed works. The Roman edition of 1764 is also catalogued by the Bibliothèque nationale de France and specimens are documented in major bibliographic collections.
