European school (XX) - The Harem - da Frederick Arthur Bridgman

This painting reprises “The Pipe-Smoker” by Giovanni Battista Torriglia (Genoa, 1857–1937), a Genoese painter trained at the Accademia Ligustica and a pupil of Nicolò Barabino, best known for his interpretations of genre painting and scenes of domestic and family life, rendered with a delicate brushstroke and a warm, enveloping light that characterized his style, inherited from the Genoese master and developed in intimate family scenes that almost always take place within the walls of the home. The work offered here is a master’s copy; the artist of the Italian school has carefully reproduced, with technical precision and painterly sensitivity, the original subject of the Ligurian master. It is therefore not an autograph Torriglia painting, but a faithful reinterpretation in style, intended for those who love the 19th-century artistic atmosphere and seek an accessible work.
