ESPAGNAC (Baron of). History of Maurice, Count of Saxony, Du - Lot 66

ESPAGNAC (Baron of). History of Maurice, Count of Saxony, Duke of Courland and Semigallia, Marshal-General of the Camps and Armies of His Most Christian Majesty. Paris, Printed by Philippe-Denys Pierres, 1775. 3 volumes in-4, marbled calfskin, triple blind-stamped raised bands, decorated spine, red title and volume number labels, red edges (contemporary binding). First in-4 edition of one of the finest works on the life and military campaigns of the Count of Saxony (1696–1750), Marshal of the Armies of Louis XV. Written by the Baron d’Espagnac, a former aide-de-camp and friend of the marshal, the work was first published in 1773 in in-12 format. A fine portrait of the Count of Saxe, engraved by Petit after a painting by Hyacinthe Rigaud, and 45 maps and plans, some spanning two pages or unfolding, in Volume III. A lovely copy. The map of the city of Brussels (plate no. 10) appears twice in Volume II. A few quires show slight, uniform foxing. Minor repairs to the binding.
