Ernst van Leyden (1892–1969) - Composition en Rouge

This large-format abstract oil painting by Ernst van Leyden (1892–1969) is signed and dated bottom left, Leyden 59. The composition is dominated by a deep red-orange field, in which angular and curved shapes in black, brown, bluish gray, pink, and white are layered over one another. Small accents in bright yellow and chartreuse punctuate the warm palette. Wide brushstrokes, translucent overpaintings, and sharply bounded color fields alternate, creating a layered and dynamic image structure. On the back are, among other things, the inscriptions Ernst van Leyden, September 1959, Venezia, and Composition en rouge. Work dimensions: 153 × 90 cm. Including frame: 165 × 101 cm. The frame shows some damage. Artist biography Ernst van Leyden (Rotterdam, 1892–1969) was a Dutch painter, graphic artist, and sculptor with a strongly international career. The Whitney Museum of American Art lists him in its artist collection, while the National Gallery of Art in Washington owns nineteen works by him.
