ENGLISH SCHOOL (LATE 18TH / EARLY 19TH CENTURY) PORTRAIT OF A LADY WEARING A HAT AND A PALE BLUE SHAWL Oil on canvas 76 x 63.5cm (29¾ x 25in.) Provenance: Cider House Galleries Ltd., Bletchingley, Surrey (as Attributed to Johnson) Condition Report: The canvas has been lined. Some minor scuffs to the extreme edges commensurate with rubbing to the frame. Craquelure is present across the image and the area to her blue shawl might require stabilisation. An area of loss is present and there is some slight lifting. Inspection under UV reveals large areas of retouching to the background, most notably along the lower edge, along the right side of the canvas and to the upper left corner. Restoration is evident to the flowers in the lower left quadrant and throughout the scenery. Various retouches are present to the sitter's clothing, as well as infilling to her face and decolletage. The image presents a cloudy varnish and surface dirt.
