English School (17th Century) Civil war interest, oil on board, Colonel John Busbridge. 89 cm x 68 cm, image 66 cm x 49 cm. Note: Colonel John Busbridge (c. 16111666) was a prominent Parliamentarian officer and landowner from Sussex who fought during the English Civil War. Based at his family seat of Haremare Hall (or Haremere) in Etchingham, Sussex, he played both a military and administrative role in securing the county for the Parliamentary cause. Parliamentary Committee Member: In March 1643, Parliament appointed Busbridge to the Sussex Sequestration Committee. Along with his stepbrother, James Temple (who later became a regicide by signing the death warrant of King Charles I), Busbridge was tasked with seizing, managing, and administering the estates and assets of notable local Royalists. Family Ties to the Grandees: Through his stepfather, Sir Alexander Temple, Busbridge was well-connected within the high-ranking Parliamentarian circles. These connections linked him to major figures of the era, including Oliver Cromwell and later Sarah Churchill, the Duchess of Marlborough.
