The color of emerald, whose range of variations extends from a dark blue-green to a light yellow-green, is caused by small trace amounts of chromium (Cr3+) and vanadium ions (V3+). Like the pure mineral beryl, emerald also crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system and typically forms six-sided, prismatic to columnar crystals with a glassy luster on the surfaces. Its Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8 is comparable to that of beryl. Shipping as insured registered mail.
