The Belle Époque was a carefree era, a celebration of beauty and life. The major Western cities reveled in luxury, one last time before the terrible wars. Thus, in retrospect, this era earned its name: La Belle Époque, the Beautiful Era. In keeping with the spirit of the times, exquisite pieces of jewellery were crafted in platinum and gold, set with diamonds, pearls, and select coloured gemstones. Such jewellery was an essential accessory for elegant evening or formal gowns, festive dinners, or important receptions. Designs often drew on the cheerful motifs of the Neoclassical style of Marie Antoinette’s era: bows and garlands were among the most popular motifs. This pendant is a typical design of that era—yet it stands out for its exquisite quality. At its center is a delicate, perfectly symmetrical teardrop-shaped pearl. It is a natural saltwater pearl, the kind that divers still had to retrieve from the ocean floor back then. A frame of sparkling diamonds encircles the pearl. An elegant ribbon bow leads to the bail. Every element is crafted from platinum, the most precious and luxurious precious metal at the time. We have paired the pendant with a matching platinum chain. We do not know which elegant society lady once wore this pendant—the only certainty is that she had an eye for quality. Did she wear it with an evening gown by Worth or a robe by Callot Soeurs, paired with a fragrance by Guerlain or Caron?
