Elegant necklace with diamonds, pearls & Burma rubies in platinum

This necklace is designed out of the joy of contrast, the contrast of white and red and the juxtaposition of graphic clarity and playful sophistication. A pendant in the shape of a large diamond bow is set on a delicate platinum chain. A sparkling old-cut diamond forms the center. Three sculpted bands extend from it to the sides and upwards. They are set with smaller diamonds, inlaid with platinum and surround an almost complete circle of bright red rubies from Burma. Two long, movable rows of diamonds, each bearing a natural pearl, are suspended from the pendant. The circle, the ideal geometric shape, is made of high-carat gold. Its clear basic shape contrasts with the randomly entwined ribbons. The softly falling pendulums further enhance this contrast, which is also inherent in the materials used in the design, ruby against diamond. The basis for the design was the discovery that precious gemstones could be cut and set in such a way that surfaces and lines were created that appeared to consist of nothing other than colored light. This technique was perfected in the years shortly after 1900 and can be seen again and again in rings, brooches and pendants from the first two decades after 1900. In most cases, a colored stone was combined with white diamonds, so that the pieces of jewellery in elegant white were effectively enriched by a single color accent. According to its hallmarks, this piece of jewellery was created in the Anglo-Saxon world, but its design is as international as the Belle Époque itself was: it would have adorned any fashion-conscious lady in Paris as well as in Madrid or Berlin. It was later imported to Vienna, where we also discovered it.
