Elegant Art Deco Brooch with Emeralds & Diamonds in Platinum, France, c. 1930

This brooch is a sight fit for the stage, its frosty sparkle transporting us back to the Art Deco era. The interwar period was marked by profound upheavals and fascinating innovations. Electricity became the norm, film created its first international stars, the automobile conquered the cities, and architecture soared toward the sky with forms and dimensions previously unknown. While tensions continued to mount on the social and political fronts, the surface of life—for the time being—still shone with a seductive glow in films, magazines, and on the boulevards of major cities. When movie theaters, department stores, and restaurants were brightly lit at night and the headlights of automobiles brought speed and movement to the streets, people could imagine themselves in a new, modern, and better world. This brooch combines the materials so characteristic of Art Deco: luxurious platinum, vibrant green emeralds, and a multitude of sparkling diamonds. The piece of jewellery features a horizontal, stepped boat shape. The openwork central section is defined by a slightly protruding, arched band of baguette-cut diamonds, flanked above and below by intensely green emeralds. In total, approximately 5.25 carats of diamonds are set into the piece. As an unusual element, four additional emeralds—this time cabochon-cut—are set at the ends of the brooch so that they point upward and downward. This creates a shimmering interplay of light and reflections. A special—indeed, wonderful—piece of wearable jewellery history that, according to its hallmark, was crafted in France and found its way to us via Cologne.
