EDWARD JOSEPH HEAD (BRITISH 1863-1927), PULLING THE NEEPS

EDWARD JOSEPH HEAD (BRITISH 1863-1927), PULLING THE NEEPS

EDWARD JOSEPH HEAD (BRITISH 1863-1927) PULLING THE NEEPS Oil on canvas Signed and dated '88' (lower right) 49.5 x 75cm (19¼ x 29½in.) Edward Joseph Head studied at Regents Street Polytechnic and Scarborough School of Art under Albert Strange. He exhibited at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool, the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists in London. Head moved to Tenby in the 1890s, where he taught the young Augustus John and encouraged his pupil’s father to allow him to enrol at the Slade School of Fine Art. Condition Report: The canvas has been lined and is providing good support. Craquelure is present across the image but the surface appears to be stable overall. The surface is a little flat in areas and has lost some impasto, most likely as a result of the relining process. Inspection under UV reveals large areas of retouching across the sky, as well as areas to the lower edge and scattered across the landscape. The image presents an uneven varnish, surface dirt and occasional brown stains.
