Interesting landscape of a European school from the 20th century, clearly post-impressionist in sensibility, characterized by vigorous execution, an intense chromatic richness, and a particularly material treatment of the pictorial surface. The work represents a wide Mediterranean landscape open toward the sea, organized through a pronounced ascending perspective. From the foreground, covered by exuberant and colorful vegetation, the gaze passes through a succession of fields and terraces until it reaches the blue band of the sea and the large rocky promontory that dominates the horizon. One of the most prominent elements of the composition is precisely this great rocky formation, whose monumental silhouette rises above the sea and acts as the focal point of the whole scene. Its treatment through grays, blues, and whites contrasts with the extraordinary chromatic richness of the landscape in the foreground. The vegetation is built with an energetic, fragmented brushstroke that is heavily impastoed. Agaves and other Mediterranean plants appear synthesized through intense blues and turquoises, while yellows, ochres, greens, reds, and violets are distributed across the terrain with small patches of color. The artist does not intend to reproduce every element of the landscape in detail, but to convey its light, structure, and vitality. The forms are constructed directly through matter and color, leaving the painterly gesture visible and giving the work a vibrant surface. Stylistically, the painting sits within the 20th-century post-impressionist tradition, also incorporating elements close to expressionism and a certain chromatic freedom inherited from Fauvism. Nature remains fully recognizable, but color is intensified and the brushwork takes on an independent prominence relative to strictly naturalistic representation. It is especially singular the narrow and markedly vertical format of the composition. The artist takes advantage of this proportion to develop a strong sense of depth: the landscape seems to ascend from the foreground to finally open onto the sea horizon. This solution gives the work a particularly decorative and monumental presence. The painting thus constitutes an attractive interpretation of the Mediterranean landscape, in which the luminosity of the coast combines with an spontaneous and expressive execution, typical of the various renewals of the post-impressionist tradition developed during the 20th century.
