École Française (c. 1750) - Portrait de Madame Françoise Savoye

- Oil on canvas. Original canvas lined. Metal plaque with the name of the portrayed on the back, together with a document celebrating the restoration of the portrait by its great‑granddaughter Estelle Dubois in 1894. - Ce Portrait a été restauré à Paris, en 1894, par les Soins de Madame Estelle Dubois arrière petite fille de madame Françoise Savoy - In this sober portrait from 1755, the lady Françoise Savoye embodies with impeccable dignity the ultimate aspiration of the flourishing enlightened bourgeoisie: the primacy of intellect, virtuous modesty, and the value of personal effort over inherited ostentation. Clothed in a neat but austere attire — where the delicate white coif, the lace mantilla, and the simple cross necklace stand out — the depicted woman rejects the baroque excesses of the aristocracy to claim an elegance grounded in discretion. Holding a quill over the paper in the midst of writing, her serene posture not only pays tribute to literacy, accounting, and knowledge as tools of social and moral emancipation, but also turns laboriousness and domestic discipline into the true emblem of bourgeois distinction, where personal merit and reason far surpass any noble title. - Dimensions of the image without frame: 65 x 83 cm / 87 x 104 cm with exclusive custom frame.
